"Toughest Job"

The lightening of the night sky by the dawn
Means in a few hours, I'll be home
Home where darkness hid more demons and fright
For my wife at home, than I faced all night
For while I worked and prowled the dark streets
Against the powers of evil I try to compete
My bride of eighteen years
Tosses and worries of monsters, death and fears

It's not lack of trust that worries her so
It's a fact of life on the job, a fact that she knows
A siren in the distance may mean I didn't survive
A car on the street may mean a chaplain's arrived
To bring her the news she always feared
A story she always dreaded to hear

But the things I've encountered, I've had some control
Not so for my wife, not in her role
I've always known which job was the toughest
The one without the badge, her job is the roughest
