"Ode To An Officer In Training"

Dedicated to my Husband
Basic Officer J. A. Thomas

Oh, sad and lonely nights be still my heart;
My dearest love has up and gone away.
I ask myself, "how come he must depart?"
Time moves so slowly with each passing day.

From Sunday till the dark of Friday night
He's absent from our home so he can train.
Sometimes I'm overcome by my own plight,
But then I think of why he must remain.

He stays so he can serve and well protect
Those people who may need his help some time.
The honor in his actions I respect;
Few men would choose this path of fighting crime.

Though loneliness and loss I may abhor;
His calling makes me love him even more.
