"Shattered"

I heard the news today
My heart almost stopped
My mind spun in different directions
How did this happen?
You have stopped me so many times before!
I told you how I worried about you
You just laughed and told me how silly I was

I heard the news today
The phone receiver fell from my numb fingers
I dropped to my knees
The tears fell from my eyes unchecked
The pain was unbearable, almost physical
How could this be?

I heard the news today
Never again would you call me out of the blue just to say hi
We would never sit by the ocean and talk again
Never would we watch the moon rise together again

I heard the news today
I will never see your face again
Never look into your beautiful eyes
I wont ever see your smile again or hear your laughter
Never again will I feel the warmth of your arms
Or have the comfort of your friendship

I heard the news today
You drove last night after drinking
This time you didn't make it home
You weren't the only one who died though
You took with you an innocent family of five,
Why? I had asked you so many times, "Oh, I will be fine,"
you would laugh. "I don't have far to drive."

I heard the news today
And my soul shattered
Did you ever stop to think about those of us you would leave alive?
